<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Arrival to Highborne Cay</image:title>
<image:caption>Highborne Cay was a complete 180 degree vibe compared to where we just came from. It was beautiful, no doubt. I guess that why it was a total playground for the rich and important. We were surrounded by Mega yachts employed with staff in matching polos, people on those iron man jet pack water things, and more jet skis than you could imagine. It was strange to see so much affluence congregated in one place, but we poured ourselves a fancy whiskey, put on our best swimsuits and embraced it. We only stayed here one night as it wasn’t really our scene. Plus the weather was perfect the next day for sailing. So the next morning, we set our course for the slightly more remote anchorage in Shroud Cay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Shroud Cay</image:title>
<image:caption>It only took a couple of hours to arrive in Shroud Cay. We didn’t get the dinghy down right away because we just felt like lazing out and relaxing ( probably too many fancy whiskeys from the night before!). We ultimately regretted this decision due to the weather taking an ugly turn over the next few days. Our dinghy set up is pretty difficult at the moment and putting it together in rough weather is a chore, which is a huge understatement. We waited a couple of days in hopes that the weather would clear up so we could explore the island, which never happened. Around 10 p.m., on the final night we spent in Shroud Cay , we got ambushed with a 45 knot squall out of nowhere. The boat violently sailed on anchor 180 degrees and we were heeled over so much , the rail dipped in the water. Our anchor held perfectly though, and everyone in the anchorage reported minimal to no damage. That morning we decided that we were done with this unprotected anchorage . Maybe next time, Shroud Cay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Rocky Dundas Cave</image:title>
<image:caption>Taking a short dinghy ride around the other side of the Cay, there is a small reef to snorkel. We didn’t see many fish here, but still fun none the less. Our absolute favorite spot was the famous Rocky Dundas Cave. The Rocky Dundas Cave is a hidden cave that is only accessible by swimming under a submerged ledge that leads into a large open cavern on the other side. The amount of fish and colorful coral was like nothing we had ever seen! I was extremely nervous at first to swim under a ledge into a cave, and was a few seconds from chickening out. I am so thankful that I just went for it. Well worth it! With our visa expiration approaching, our time in the Bahamas was running out. So we had to depart our new found paradise and set course for the famous tourist hot spot, Staniel Cay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Famous swimming pigs</image:title>
<image:caption>We relunctantly visited pig beach, which ended up being pretty much what we expected. Aside from the adorable piglets, it was a bunch of giant smelly pigs harassing you for food. We took a few pictures with them and then left. The spot we really enjoyed and would recommend was Thunderball grotto, an underwater cavern filled with beautiful fish. If it wasn’t for the current and tide, we could’ve spent all day there. It was a perfect afternoon, until we went to leave and our outboard failed and we had to get towed back to the boat. Embarrasing! Fortunately we were able to get our outboard running later that day. We spent our last day just swimming off the boat in the crystal clear water. After Staniel Cay, we made a quick stop at the nearby Black Point where we hit up the local happy hour with a couple of other cruisers from the anchorage. After way too many rum punches, we had a great time dancing like drunken sailors. We drug ourselves out of our cabin the next morning and set course for Georgetown.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Great Inagua</image:title>
<image:caption>The lighthouse was another cool spot to check out and it was only a short walk from the dock. The views are breathtaking at the top , and Jerrod really enjoyed nerding out on all the mechanical gear. The checkout process was probably the most laidback encounter we’ve had with a customs agent. We were in and out within 15 minutes. Plus as a bonus, the customs and immigration office is conviently located next to the liquor store, so we were able to get one last bottle of our favorite Bahamian rum! The next morning around 4 a.m., we set course for our next adventure , The Dominican Republic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Leaving Eleuthera</image:title>
<image:caption>We awake bright and early in Rock Sound Harbour and prepare ourselves to head toward the Exumas. We were anxiously excited to see this part of the Bahamas because of how extraordinarily beautiful it’s reported to be. When you see the touristy commercials for the Bahamas, it’s likely that it was filmed somewhere in the Exumas. It was set to be a fairly straightforward sail, and it was for the most part. The leg of the trip that we needed to exercise a little extra caution was navigating through Davies channel. This channel brings you out of the Eleuthera island chain and is surrounded by reef.We had studied it extensively before departing and it’s a good thing we did! The very moment we turned into the channel, our chart plotter decides to go black. We were able to use eyeball navigation, and made it through annoyed, but unscathed. The trip was pretty uneventful after that. We got the chart plotter back up , and we made it to Highborne Cay around 6 that evening.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Georgetown</image:title>
<image:caption>Georgetown is the perfect place for cruisers to do some provisioning, get diesel, or any boat supplies they need. It’s also a popular place to check in and out of the country. We spent about a week here taking care of few errands. We anchored just outside the famous chat n chill bar, so we had some fun too. We found a few nice snorkel spots, enjoyed the hike up to “the monument”, where passing cruisers leaving their boat name written in sandstone down at the base. We couldn’t leave Georgetown without leaving ours too! Our original plan was to complete check out here also, but with 2 weeks left on our visa , we figured we had enough time to see one more island. So we picked up anchor and set sail for Great Inagua.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Great Inagua</image:title>
<image:caption>We arrived in Great Ingaua around 5 a.m. On our approach to the island, we were so excited to have caught a huge tuna fish, only to have it snatched away by the taxman just as we were pulling it up to the boat. If you’re a fisherman, you know how devastating this is, but I guess sharks have to eat too! We anchored around sunrise just outside the government dock , where you can tie up for 10 dollars a day. As soon as the office opened up , we called and secured ourselves a spot. The anchorage here is very unprotected and the docks have very limited space. So we were lucky to have gotten a spot , especially since it’s first come, first serve. Great Inagua is definitely in the running as one of our favorite places we visited in the Bahamas. It’s a small island and there is not a whole lot there, but the friendliness of the locals make you feel right at home. There were a couple of restaurants to try. We loved Angies place, even though the menu choices were fried chicken or fried chicken. But, it was some damn good fried chicken!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - Cambridge Cay</image:title>
<image:caption>The conditions that morning leaving Shroud Cay were perfect for sailing. Windy enough to keep the sails full, but sea state calm enough for the passage to be comfortable. I sort of wish we were planning on going a little further that day. But in just a few hours, we arrived to our next anchorage, Bells Cay in the Land and Sea Park. The Land and Sea Park is a stretch in the Exuma Chain that is strictly regulated and protected, so its kept very pristine. We were excited to stay here awhile and explore the area, so after spending one night at anchor, we moved to adjacent mooring field in Cambridge Cay. The mooring field is exceptionally well maintained here, so at only 10 dollars a day we were picked up a ball for a total of six days. We could have spent 30 days here if we weren’t starting to run low on food! Just a short paddle away from the mooring field to the shore, there is an awesome hike up a steep cliff where we found incredible views overlooking the ocean and the bay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Exumas - The Famous Staniel Cay</image:title>
<image:caption>We arrive at our next destination, the famous tourist spot, Staniel Cay. We don’t usually go for the touristy spots, but we felt that we wouldn’t be doing the Exumas right if we skipped Staniel Cay. We dropped the hook in the very crowded anchorage just off the infamous “pig beach”. We stayed long enough to hit the hot spots. By hot spots, I mean the laundry mat, beer store, and trash collection. ( the laundry mat and beer store happened to be the same place… the liquormat ) It wasn’t all business though.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2:Bahamas Eleuthera - After a few days in Rock sound, it was time to say farewell to Eleuthera, and make or way toward Highborne Cay, Exumas. We immensely enjoyed our time here and would definitely stop again.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2:Bahamas Eleuthera - Around 6 p.m. we arrived to the entrance of Hatchet Bay which is notoriously narrow. Navigating through this cut is hair raising as it looks like you can reach out and touch the cliff faces on either side! Although this is an optical illusion as its known to be at least 80 feet wide and a ferry boat much wider than us passes through here multiple times per week. Once through the cut, you are anchored in what is known as the most protected bay in the Bahamas. We would definitely agree to that statement as we had some of the calmest nights at anchor we’ve ever experienced here.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2:Bahamas Eleuthera - We decided to stay in Hatchet Bay for at least a week. With the anchorage so calm, it was a perfect spot to leave to boat and explore the island by car. Our first stop was the glass window bridge, which is a popular tourist stop of a bridge that divides the unruly ocean form a tranquil bay. It was fascinating to see for a few minutes, but really its just a bridge. The spot we really loved was the queens baths, an absolutely incredible spot and a must see if you are in Eleuthera. The hike to get there was a little rough with jagged rock, especially since I was still dealing with an injured foot when I did not land my jump off the boat in Bimini. But, once you make your way to the tide pools, its worth it! Being able to wade in these clear protected tide pools while being showered by ocean swell that is explosively crashing on the cliff face is truly something special.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2:Bahamas Eleuthera - We spent the rest of the time taking the car exploring the small neighboring towns of Governer’s Harbour, Gregory town, and Alice town. We ate lots of good food, met some amazing locals, and soaked in the culture of this unique island. It was a perfect spot to explore by vehicle, which turned out to be an adventure by itself. All of the controls were written in Japanese and Jerrod had to pop the hood every time to get it to start, but we made do! Overall, we enjoyed this side of Eleuthera. On addition to the amazing natural beauty, the small town feel and friendly locals made you feel so welcome.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2:Bahamas Eleuthera - After about 10 days in Hatchet Bay, it was time to continue on. We made our way way back through the narrow cut and set our course south toward Rock sound. a small town on the other end of the island. The anchorage here was gorgeous and moderately protected. We were needing to restock provisions by now, and this spot was perfect for that. It might be the first grocery store in the Bahamas we’ve visited that I would consider well stocked. We took a hike to the cathedral caves, which were remarkable. Its a short hike on a well defined trail just off of queens highway. Once making your way down the ladder and inside the caves, the view is breathtaking. The sunlight pierces large holes above and lights up the whole cave, where you can see dramatic tree roots running from ceiling to floor, beautiful rock formations, and colonies of bats. This spot is also known as spider cave because supposedly it hosts tons of webs and spiders. Although, we didn’t notice that to be true, thankfully!</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2:Bahamas Eleuthera - After a boisterous sail across Northwest Providence channel, we arrived in Meeks Island where we anchored for the evening. The next morning we made our way toward Hatchet Bay in Eleuthera. Our first challenge was to get our timing perfect through the infamous current cut which can get up to 10 knots of current and become impassable or even dangerous. We pass through without issue during slack tide and are treated to a beautiful —- nautical mile sail toward the anchorage. The conditions were perfect for an impromptu race with out buddy boat, a 42 j boat. He left us in his wake, but it was still fun nonetheless.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Berry Islands - The next morning, we couldn’t wait to explore around the island, so we lowered the dingy, packed our fishing gear and cameras, and headed straight for the nearby blue hole which was the first blue hole either of us has seen. So cool! After lunch on the beach, we explored around the island with the dingy to try our luck at fishing. Unfortunately, we only caught little tiny grouper which we had to throw back. Jerrod tried with the speargun, but once multiple bull sharks started showing up, we nixed that plan. We only stayed a couple of days here and never went into the town, which we regret. If we come this way again, we’ll try to spend a little more time here. It really is a beautiful spot.</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Berry Islands - We would have loved to stay here at least a week, but the drawback to this anchorage is that it offers little to no protection from weather. <image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Berry Islands - Early in the morning during high tide, we pick up anchor and set our course toward Soldier Cay. After rounding the north tip of the island, its a short couple of hours to this incredible remote beach. There’s nothing here except for maybe a few other sailboats. It’s an ideal spot to disconnect from internet and social media and just enjoy being in nature. That is exactly what we did, explored the island, drank rum, swam in the water, and layed in the sand. It was perfect!</image:title>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2: Bahamas Berry Islands - Ourselves along with a few other boats departed Bimini and headed for Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Island chain. The passage across the Bahama Bank was much rougher than anticipated. With choppy sea state , the time across took longer than originally planned and we eventually decided to stop and anchor. The Thought was to try to get some sleep and continue on in the morning. However, this was a futile attempt as zero sleep was had that night. As soon as the sun came up , we continued on our way for a couple more hours until we made our way to the anchorage. After setting the hook, we celebrated our new spot with a pina coloda and fell straight to sleep.</image:title>

<image:caption>Arriving into Bimini is something we will never forget. We had never seen water this blue and clear before, and this is compared to Hawaii and multiple Caribbean islands. The water is truly something special here. We stayed a little over three weeks at Brown’s Marina, which ended being an awesome stay. <image:caption>After spending a month waiting on a weather window, organizing Covid tests, and taking care of a few other official paperwork items, we left Fort Pierce, FL in late February 2021. As far as weather goes, it was a relatively uneventful trip to Bimini. Knowing how intense the Gulf stream can get, we were pleased to see it looking like glass even though we had to motor across. We even caught a lovely Cobia on the way, which we were extremely stoked about!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 2 - Bahamas: Bimini - Goodbye Bimini</image:title>
<image:caption>Overall, Bimini was pretty incredible, even though I broke my foot jumping from the boat to the dock. Fun Fact about me: I’m known for being very accident prone! After we got our feel for this small but beautiful island, we were excited to see more of what the Bahamas was all about. So, we jumped on the first weather window that came about and set sail for the Berry Islands.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 1: Key West, US East Coast and Corona - Everyone has a start of the pandemic story… here is ours</image:title>
<image:caption>We left the Dry Tortugas and headed for Key West. The plan was to spend a couple of days here to refill our diesel cans and prepare for our upcoming Bahamas trip. We dropped anchor in Fleming Cay anchorage and immediately headed into town in search of a cold IPA. It was at one of the local pubs that we learned of the approaching pandemic and all the lockdowns that were starting to happen in parts of the US. At this point , the keys were still fully open with hoards of tourists and cruise ships. We still weren’t sure of the seriousness of the situation and just kind of shrugged it off. Still thinking it would resolve over the next week or so, we continued with our plans to sail to the Bahamas. A couple of hours after departing the anchorage, we received a call from the marina we had booked with telling us not to come because borders had been shut. So we made a U-turn and headed back to Key West. We dropped anchor back in Fleming Cay and within 24 hours , the Keys went into complete lockdown as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 1: Key West, US East Coast and Corona - Sailing the Cheasepeke Bay</image:title>
<image:caption>Sailing the Cheasepeke Bay was an amazing experience. Between the great sailing conditions , endless anchor spots, and beautiful nature, we could not have asked for more. We spent a few months leisurely exploring the area and hitting all the spots such as the Solomons, St. Micheals, and Annapolis. When in Annapolis we rented a car for a few days to further check out the Washington DC monuments, which I enjoyed much more than I thought I would. We also made a lunch stop in Baltimore where Jerrod finally got to take me to his favorite restaurant with the best crab cakes in the world, G&Ms. He had been talking about this place for years and he was absolutely right! Those crab cakes by themselves would have been worth the trip up the coast. We were enjoying this part of the country so much, we decided we wanted to go further north and see more , New York or possibly Maine. so we sailed to the top of the bay crossed through the C&D canal and into the Delaware Bay, which ended up being a most regrettable decision…</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 1: Key West, US East Coast and Corona - Life at anchor in Key West</image:title>
<image:caption>So there we were, at anchor in a spot that was completely shut down, borders closed in the country we had planned for a year to visit, and no marinas accepting reservations so that we could store the boat to make a plan B . We were stuck in a ghost town paradise with no idea what to do next. We just sat at anchor hoping things would open up in a week or so. Well a week turned into many weeks, weeks turned into months, and so on. Thankfully we were well provisioned before the pandemic hit so we weren’t struggling in that area. We spent the next three months hanging out on the boat , dingy fishing for snapper in the afternoons, and looking forward to our once a week trip to the grocery store which we were allotted 1 hour. Aside from a rough case of cabin fever, our lockdown experience wasn’t too bad. We know many others had it much worse. With the beginning of hurricane season approaching in May, we had to make a plan to leave Key west and get out of the hurricane belt. Borders were still closed south of us, so we had no other choice but to head north and cruise the US east coast. In Hindsight, we are actually thankful that we were “forced” into this opportunity because we most likely would never have chosen to do this trip otherwise. Since we were eager to make it out of the hurricane belt before the season started, we took every weather window that came our way and coastal hopped as quickly as possible until we made it to the Chesepeake Bay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 1: Key West, US East Coast and Corona - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>We hauled the boat out and performed a thorough inspection on her. We were estatic to find out that the only major damage was our pride. We had some minor fiberglass work to do on the rudder, a few scrapes on the hull that needed to be repainted, and easy repair on the keel. The boat was fully inspected for structural damage which thankfully turned up no issues. It only took us a week to finish the repairs and we were back in the water in no time! This was a hard lesson. We actually enjoyed this area so much , we spent the next couple of weeks anchored in the Sassafras river before heading back down the Cheasepeke bay. We revisited Annapolis and St.Micheals , but only for a short time. We made our way back to the Solomons where we discovered an oil leak in our engine. We ended spending about a month here repairing the issue and enjoying the charming town. We needed to drive back to Louisiana for Jerrod’s best friends wedding, so the spring cove marina was the perfect spot to leave the boat while we visited home for a couple of weeks. After the Solomons, we continued south , eventually making our way to Beaufort, NC where we discovered that the engine problem we had over a month before was once again an issue. We engine up having to just get _____ rebuilt to fix the issue permanently. I guess these are the not as fun aspects of owning a sailboat. We spent another few weeks here waiting on a good weather window. With gale force storm after gale force storm, it felt like that window would never come. Once it did we jumped on it quickly, even though it was 30 degrees outside and the lines were frozen. We didn’t care , we were ready!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 1: Key West, US East Coast and Corona - Crash on an underwater jetty</image:title>
<image:caption>The timing through the C&D canal can be tricky. The currents are strong and with our speed boat you will either be fighting the current through the canal or in the Deleware Bay. You must choose. We chose to go with the current in the canal, meaning that once we got to the Bay, we would be fighting the current head on in the bay. So our plan was to anchor in the bay, have breakfast and wait for the current to shift. It would have been a good plan if it wasn’t for the poorly charted underwater rock wall that we smashed into! This is probably the scariest moment we’ve had on the boat. After we hit the wall, I immediately started ripping up floor boards to ensure we hadn’t put a hole in our boat and possibly sink. Thankfully, that was not the case!. We weren’t in the clear yet , however. We were now stuck with the rock wall being in between our rudder and keel. With the tide dropping we had to do something quick, or we wouldv’e been high and dry. By some miracle, the wind was in the exact direction we needed in order to pull out the sail and crab walk off the wall. We got ourselves off , anchored, and started researching nearby boat yards to haul out and do a proper inspection of the damage. Jerrod dove and inspected what he could, but its so murky there , it was hard to really see what was going on. We found a boat yard that could haul us out in Georgetown, Maryland. So the next morning, we headed back through the C&D canal , toward the boatyard in the Sassafras River, where we would spend the next week repairing our home.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 1: Key West, US East Coast and Corona - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>We left Beaufort , NC and headed for Charleston, SC where we spent new years and prepared for our final leg toward Fort Pierce, FL. On that passage south, the weather turned something ugly on us and we were forced to make a stop in Fernandino Beach and let it pass before continuing on. This actually turned out to be a pretty cool stop as far as the town is concerned. The current through the area however, is nothing nice. We departed Fernandino and had an amazing sail down to Fort Pierce. Perfect sailing the whole way, saw a pod of what seemed like a hundred dolphins, and Jerrod even caught a sailfish! We dropped anchor around 3a.m. and celebrated the end of the season with a bottle of Chardonnay. We spent the next month and a half here planning our second season in the Bahamas, taking care of some paperwork errands, and getting all the covid travel requirements completed. After a couple of years of trying, finally we were on our way to the Bahamas!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - Season 1: Key West, US East Coast and Corona - Our first cruising season</image:title>
<image:caption>Our first cruising season began in early March 2020. Our plans were to sail to the Dry Tortugas and then spend our first season exploring the Bahamas. After finishing up my last work contract with Sarasota Memorial Hospital, we set our course to Fort Jefferson ( Dry Tortugas). It turned out to be a very boisterous trip and was probably some of the biggest waves we’ve been through. At one point, we were actually riding with bare poles and the engine in reverse to slow us down! However, this is what we signed up for , right?! Needless to say , we were happy to arrive and drop the hook. We spent a few days here exploring the fort, fishing, nature watching, and enjoying time at anchor.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - How We Afford to Travel - But we still have to pay for some things such as food, boat maintainence/insurance, meeting friends at the bar, etc.</image:title>
<image:caption>So in order to top off the cruising kitty when needed, I still work as a contract physical therapist by pausing our travels and completing 3 month contracts for hospitals. Jerrod works as a yacht broker which is difficult to do while traveling out of the country, but it has supplemented us at times. Overall, it took some getting used to not having a steady biweekly paycheck, but with the right planning and discipline , we found that it’s completely doable. We have met so many fellow cruisers who have found creative ways to finance their full time travels. especially if you’re internet savvy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - How We Afford to Travel - So then how?</image:title>
<image:caption>Spoiler Alert: We still work! ( I know, totally boring) . First of all we saved like crazy people ,living well below our means for a couple of years ( no cable, no vacations, cook at home, etc) . We had some equity in the house we sold, so that was a win. Currently, we live very cheaply on the boat ( no mortgage, no car note and associated insurances) Entertainment is usually free such as hiking, swimming, laying out on a remote beach. Also, we don’t spend a whole lot of time at marinas unless I’m fulfilling a contract at the moment. Overall, our monthly expenses are a fraction of what they were living on land.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are not trust fund kids ( that would be awesome though!) We have a very small following on you tube and no Patreon, so thats not a viable for us at this point. And we are way too non confrontational to make it in any type of criminal exploits!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - How it Started</image:title>
<image:caption>Jerrod and I met in high school many, many sunsets ago. He was a senior and I was a sophomore. Fast Forward seven years, and we get married in 2005. I finished college and then grad school, ultimately receiving my degree in physical therapy. Jerrod in the meantime worked in industry and at the same time received his degree in electronics.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - How it Started</image:title>
<image:caption>We worked in these fields 10+ ish years. At this point, we found ourselves pretty happy, but also looking for something more exciting than the 9-5, two car garage, must have the latest I-phone kind of life. So we started looking at possible places to move, specifically somewhere with blue water. We’re water people , and the water in Louisiana is a lovely chocolate brown color! After researching and exploring options we ultimately figured that this move would just be the same routine with a better view.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Our Travels - How it Started</image:title>
<image:caption>Fast forward again another couple of years, we were still living in Louisiana with the same jobs , but had begun to adapt a more minimalistic lifestyle. After swearing off television ( and the ridiculous bill that comes with it) , we would occasionally watch you tube videos for entertainment. When searching for spearfishing, we came across a couple of well known sailing channels ( this was before everybody and their momma had a sailing channel). We thought… WOW! ? This is a thing that people do? Live on boats? travel on them? Thats pretty freaking awesome! We were determined at this point to make this happen for us.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Travels - How it Started</image:title>
<image:caption>So we worked a couple of more years saving as much as possible, paying off all debt, and taking sailing lessons. We bought a small sailboat to learn on and practice in our local bay. We eventually found our liveaboard boat Acadian, sold our house, and quit our jobs ( well kind of quit our jobs- you can read more about that in another blog about how we afford to travel) . We’ve been living aboard and traveling a couple of years now, and we don’t have a single regret.</image:caption>

<image:title>From the Galley - Happy Hour - Bloody Mary: Charleston , South Carolina Random Hole in the Wall pub, don’t recall the name unfortunately</image:title>
<image:caption>There’s nothing like a delicious spicy bloody Mary on Sunday morning after a night of too many libations. We’ve had many tasty versions of this regret softening cocktail, but this one had a remarkable unique flavor that really made it memorable. And no, it wasn’t the ridiculous amount of garnish that made it distinct. (If I want a cheeseburger in my cocktail, I’ll order it separately , thanks!) The secret to this award winning Mary is not really a secret at all. It’s all in the Charleston mix which has won an award for top mix 9 years in a row. You can look up the ingredients yourself on the almighty google, but I think what makes the mix unique is the use of habanero mash in lieu of horseradish. Its definitely worth a try! Recipe: 2 oz premium vodka 5 oz Charleston Bloody Mary mix ( I prefer bold and spicy) Pour over ice and add a squeeze of lime Garnish as desired ( don’t go crazy here!, simpler can be better)</image:caption>

<image:title>From the Galley - Happy Hour - Gully Wash : Bimini, Bahamas Big Mike’s Conch Stand</image:title>
<image:caption>We tried our first gully wash ay Big mike’s conch stand immediately after checking into Bimini, Bahamas. Big Mike’s is a small roadside stand overlooking radio beach, which had some of the best BBQ we’ve had in a long time. We were told by another patron that we must try this island specialty drink. I wasn’t quite sold on this cocktail at first. I’m not really a gin drinker and i’m not a huge fan of condensed milk. But, we ordered a couple anyway because we are traveling so we can try new things, after all. This simple three ingredient cocktail turned out to be surprisingly delicious and refreshing. It’s now a common choice for sundowners aboard Acadian! Recipe: 1 oz premium gin 1/2 sweetened condensed milk 2 oz coconut water ( plain, not flavored) Sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg if desired Chill or serve over ice</image:caption>

<image:caption>While cruising the northern U.S. East coast, every bar we frequented highlighted their grapefruit crush cocktail. After seeing it over and over again, we finally decided to try one at carpenter street saloon in St. Micheals, Maryland. It’s a simple recipe, but we were told the trick is to use the freshest fruit you can find. Many places also made them with oranges. It’s light and refreshing, plus fresh grapefruit is healthy, right? So you feel good about having a few! Recipe: 1/2 cup fresh squeezed grapefruit or orange ( strain pulp) 1 oz premium vodka 1/2 oz triple sec 2 oz carbonated water or lemon/lime soda Garnish with grapefruit slice Serve over ice</image:caption>

<image:caption>Once all vegetables are in the pot add flour. Using a large spoon sprinkle the flour evenly over the bottom of the pot. The key here is to brown the flour without burning it so stir continuously. You will continue to add flour (four or five large spoons full) don’t forget to stir, this should take 45 to 90 minutes. The purpose of the flour is to thicken the dish. Once the flour is brown add the tomatoes and a cup of water, stir well and cover the dish so the tomatoes can break down (15mins or so). Next add the seafood stock, sausage and tomato sauce then bring to a simmer. Once the dish is at a simmer, add the pearl onions, grape tomatoes, and some of the green onions. simmer for 20 mins then add the shrimp (you can start the rice at this time as well). let the dish cook for another 15 mins then serve over rice with garlic bread and garnish with the onion tops. Bon Appetit</image:caption>

<image:caption>Preparation: Chop all vegetables, de-bone the two chickens and remove all skin. Season the de-boned chicken liberally this is a big dish and the flavor will come from seasoning the chickens. I like to use the carcass and skin to make a chicken stock. you can bypass this step and buy a pre-made stock if you choose. You can also buy chicken that is already processed we like using whole organic chickens.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Next make the Roux (you can also buy a pre-made roux… we always make our own) Add the two cups of flour to a sauce pan, add olive oil to the flour… add just enough to form a paste the flour should no longer be dry. apply medium to low heat and stir… the objective is to darken the flour as much as possible without burning it. “!!IMPORTANT!! don’t stop browning the flour until it looks like chocolate!” Open your windows because it will get smokey but its going to be worth the effort, trust me.</image:caption>

<image:title>From the Galley - Cajun Roots - Jerrod’s Gumbo Juice Great for Soups, Stews, Gumbo… Ingredients Peppers vinegar Water Chop fresh peppers… use whatever kind you want. If you like spicy then use hot peppers like Habaneros, Chillies or if your hard core get some Carolina Reapers. Chop enough peppers to fill a mason jar or whatever container you’re using. Fill the jar with the peppers then mix white vinegar and water 50/50 mix in a sauce pan. Heat the mixture on a stove until it just begins to boil, remove from the heat and pour into the jar of peppers. Securely tighten the lid and let the jar cool. If using a mason jar the cooling affect will seal the container. When your ready to enjoy open the jar and pour liberally over your dish… ENJOY!</image:title>

<image:title>Vessel - We purchased our 1995 Beneteau First 42s7 in 2017. She was a single owner boat and had been located in Panama City, FL. for 15+ years. Immediately after purchasing the boat we began repairs as per our survey to satisfy both the mortgage lien holder and our insurance company. this is what the boat needed: Complete bottom job, 10 New thru-hull fittings, r eplacement of the standing rigging, new prop shaft, new main grounding plate for electrical bonding and replacement of the house battery bank. At this time we also had the freeboard polished, replaced a lot of the running rigging, installed a new autopilot, installed a small temporary chart plotter and we had to repair one of the two heads. A few months in the yard and she was ready for service… we still had a big wish list but the boat was sea worthy.</image:title>

<image:caption>Fastforward to October 10 2019 and the first Cat 5 hurricane to strike the contiguous United States since Andrew in 1992 hits Panama City, FL. Basically our boat took a direct hit from a Cat 5 storm… 160mph sustained winds… Michael is the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle. Being from South Louisiana we know what a hurricane is, this was something different! It left a tornado path the size of a hurricane, words and pictures cannot explain the destruction this thing left in its wake.</image:caption>

<image:title>Vessel - The day before the storm hit Holly and I prepared the boat and evacuated Panama City, FL. we drove to Dauphin Island where my parents had a house. the very next morning we drove into PC and arrived at the St. Andrews marina where our boat was moored by 9:00am. We were clearly some of the first people to see the marina and all of the destruction. Our intention was to save our boat, after an inspection from our insurance company we moved her to Pensacola for repairs</image:title>

<image:caption>After moving the boat to Pensacola and scouring for the best workforce our insurance was willing to pay for we immediately began repairs. The boat was in the yard for repairs from October 24 2018 until May 31st 2019 a total of 7 months! Once it was finally over, total repair costs almost equalled total value of the boat… Our insurance company paid for 95% of the repairs… We were very lucky!</image:caption>
